Full restoration of wooden houses
A wooden house, like any other house, needs constant care, repair, and maintenance during operation. Caring for a wooden house and inspecting it for damage to the paintwork must be done constantly.
First of all, caring for a wooden house concerns the facade and especially the basement and lower level, which receives dirt splashed by water drops that fall to the ground. An important operational rule that must be followed is the inspection of the lower crowns of a house made of rounded or profiled timber, especially those in contact with the foundation, or the inspection of the floor strapping of a frame house, as well as seasonal washing of the facade, roof overhangs, and the roof itself with detergents at least once a year: in spring or autumn, and preferably twice a year. More details on this on the "Seasonal maintenance and wood washing" page.
The next rule for caring for a wooden house is constant operational or repair painting. It so happens that wood is a very elastic and living material that has very high linear expansion rates, and therefore this is the main reason why coatings with a thick film in the form of varnish or paint crack and peel off over time.
Yes, recently so-called non-film-forming coatings, called impregnations, oils, and glazes, have gained popularity, but this does not negate the fact that wood painted with these paintwork materials needs to be painted. It is impossible to say unequivocally about a clear frequency of painting or repainting with one or another paintwork coating, but on average for oils, impregnations, and glazes this period is approximately 5 years, for varnishes and paints - 8 years. But all these terms are very relative.
They directly depend on such external and design factors:
- Presence of trees: around the house, which protect the house from direct sunlight, and accordingly from excessive heating and ultraviolet rays;
- Design features: for example, the size of roof overhangs, which protect the facade of the house from water getting on its surface;
- Geographical features: the location of the house, for example, proximity to the sea, water bodies, mountainous or low-lying areas, the humidity of the climate in this region, etc., etc.
In the case of repainting wood, proper preparatory sanding must be performed. More details on this on the "Wood Sanding" page, after which proper painting must be performed, more details about which are here "Painting wooden houses".
Also, do not forget to inspect the seams and crevices in a wooden house. This is especially true for log houses and especially houses that have not yet settled. If there is a need for sealing, it must be performed only in accordance with the established rules, more details on this here "Sealing / Warm Seam".
If there is a need for a comprehensive restoration of a wooden house in order to return the house to its original appearance, we have service packages for restoration, both including all materials for restoration, and just complexes of work.
